What to Expect from Your First Personal Training Session in Glasgow

Starting personal training for the first time can feel daunting. You don't know what's going to happen, you're not sure if you're fit enough, and there's that nagging worry that you'll look like you don't know what you're doing.

Here's the thing: everyone starts somewhere. And a first PT session is nothing to be nervous about.

Let me walk you through exactly what to expect.

Before You Arrive

What to bring:

  • Comfortable training clothes and trainers
  • A water bottle
  • An open mind

That's genuinely it. You don't need to have done any preparation, you don't need to be at a certain fitness level, and you don't need to know anything about training.

What to eat beforehand: Don't train on an empty stomach, but don't eat a massive meal either. A light snack 60–90 minutes before — a banana, some toast, a small bowl of porridge — is ideal.

The First 15 Minutes: The Consultation

Your first session won't start with you being thrown straight into a workout. A good PT will spend time getting to know you first.

We'll ask about:

  • Your goals (what do you actually want to achieve?)
  • Your current activity levels and training history
  • Any injuries, health conditions, or physical limitations
  • Your lifestyle — work, sleep, stress, diet
  • What's worked and not worked for you in the past

This isn't small talk. This information shapes everything we do together. The more honest you are, the better the programme we can design for you.

The Movement Assessment

Before we load any weight or push any intensity, we'll look at how you move. Basic things like how you squat, how you hinge, your posture, your mobility.

This isn't a test you can fail. It's information gathering. We're looking for any limitations that might affect your training or put you at risk of injury.

Most people have some asymmetries or movement restrictions — that's completely normal. We just need to know about them so we can work around them or address them.

The First Workout

Your first workout will be deliberately manageable. We're not trying to destroy you on day one.

The purpose of the first session is to:

  • Introduce you to the key movement patterns (squat, hinge, push, pull, carry)
  • Teach you the basics of good form
  • Get a baseline for your current fitness and strength levels
  • Leave you feeling good, not broken

You'll work hard, but you'll finish feeling capable and motivated — not lying on the floor wondering what you've got yourself into.

After the Session

We'll cool down, stretch, and have a debrief. We'll talk about what we covered, what we're going to focus on going forward, and what you should be doing between sessions.

You'll likely feel some muscle soreness in the 24–48 hours after your first session. That's completely normal — it's called DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) and it's a sign your muscles have been challenged. It'll ease off as your body adapts.

The Most Important Thing

Come in with realistic expectations. You won't transform overnight, and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying to you.

What you will get from day one is a clear plan, expert guidance, and someone genuinely invested in your success. That's the foundation everything else is built on.
